Welcome back to the final term of the school year

Welcome back to the final term of the school year. I hope you enjoyed the half term week, and for anyone who visited sunnier climes…well done you!
We finished last term with our amazing Den Building Day. I hope you have been able to enjoy the pictures on Twitter. The day really was fantastic – the whole school working together, oldest to youngest. We didn’t see any arguments or sad faces, indeed the children were bursting with enthusiasm for the project and cries of ‘come and look at my den!’ were frequently heard. Thanks to Miss Reeves and Mrs Bovingdon for organising the day, and thanks to the rest of the teachers who, I must say during our planning meeting, looked filled with horror at the thought of ‘no organisation of the groups…let the children decide’. The children did indeed decide, with no fuss, and made us all feel very proud.
The Den Building challenge was for charity and we were raising money for the Padua ward at the William Harvey Hospital. One of our reception children has been receiving treatment there and we felt that this cause was so worthy. I did point out in a text message however that we had also signed up for Cancer Research Race for Life again this year. As I said, we completely understand that families only have so much to give and we wouldn’t want you to feel that we are always pestering for money. If you wish to give to both, however, fabulous!
Despite all the controversy surrounding the Government tests this year our Year 2 and Year 6 children have all taken their SATs. Details of the results of these and information as to how the outcomes are calculated will be shared with parents via the end of year report.
On Friday we shall be celebrating the official (90th) birthday of Her Majesty the Queen. As with all good birthday celebrations we have a whole day of partying planned! We do intend to take the children to the beach in the morning for an inter-class sand palace making competition, so please ensure your child has suitable footwear. At the moment the weather is looking promising so a good layer of protective sun cream would also be advisable. We will also be having a whole school picnic lunch on the field, so packed lunches are essential! And of course the children are invited to dress in patriotic red, white and blue (I may have had my sewing machine out over half term!)
Saturday, of course, is the PTFA Queen’s Birthday Party afternoon. Tickets are £10 per family for an afternoon’s entertainment of a live band, a DJ and bouncy castles. You would need to provide your own food and beverages and we have to abide by the school rules of NO dogs and NO smoking on the school grounds (including E Cigarettes). Thank you in advance to the PTFA who have worked hard to organise the afternoon…trust me, if you saw the risk assessment, you would know they have worked hard and tried to cover all eventualities! Obviously they cannot control the weather…but the event will go ahead come rain or shine.
As always, if there is anything I can help with or you wish to make a comment, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Best wishes,
Nicola Wood
